Lesson 312

The whole wide world, above, below, around, and everywhere, did he continue to pervade with heart of Pity.

Excerpt

And he let his mind pervade one quarter of the world with thoughts of Pity; and so the second quarter, and so the third, and so the fourth. And thus the whole wide world, above, below, around, and everywhere, did he continue to pervade with heart of Pity, far-reaching, grown great, and beyond measure, free from the least trace of anger or ill-will.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Mahâ-Sudassana Sutta, King Sudassana, the “Great King of Glory,” withdraws into calm and lets his compassion spread to the east, the south, the west and the north, then to the whole world, beyond measure and without any trace of anger. Today, take a moment to think with compassion of one person, then of your neighbourhood, then of your country, then of all beings, widening the circle with each breath.
