Lesson 153

A sweet and enrapturing sound proceeds from those rows of palm-trees and strings of bells moved by the wind.

Excerpt

And again, O Śāriputra, when those rows of palm-trees and strings of bells in that Buddha country are moved by the wind, a sweet and enrapturing sound proceeds from them. Yes, O Śāriputra, as from a heavenly musical instrument consisting of a hundred thousand koṭis of sounds, when played by Āryas, a sweet and enrapturing sound proceeds, a sweet and enrapturing sound proceeds from those rows of palm-trees and strings of bells moved by the wind. And when the men hear that sound, reflection on Buddha arises in them, reflection on the Law, reflection on the Church.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Smaller Sukhâvatî-vyûha, in the Pure Land of the Buddha Amitâbha, the wind moving the palm trees and the bells makes music so sweet that it awakens in those who hear it the thought of the Buddha, of his teaching (the Dharma) and of the Community. Today, let an ordinary sound (the wind, a bird, a bell) bring you back to calm and to what is good in you.
