Lesson 154

Be ye lamps unto yourselves.

Excerpt

Therefore, O Ananda, be ye lamps unto yourselves. Be ye a refuge to yourselves. Betake yourselves to no external refuge. Hold fast to the truth as a lamp. Hold fast as a refuge to the truth. Look not for refuge to any one besides yourselves.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta, at the end of his life the Buddha invites his disciple Ananda not to depend on outside support, but to make the truth his own lamp and refuge. Today, when facing a decision, take a moment of silence to listen to what you know to be right, before seeking the opinion of others.
