Mantic uttaïr, Anecdote about a friend of God

A friend of God was weeping at the moment of his death. He was asked the reason. “I weep,” said he, “like the spring cloud, because at this moment I must die, and the thing grieves me. I must therefore groan now; for how can I die, since my heart is already with God?” One of his intimates then said to him: “Since thy heart is with God, if thou diest, thou wilt die a good death.” The Sufi replied: “Can death befall one whose heart is united with God? My heart is united with Him; thus my death seems impossible to me.”
If thou art gladdened even once by the contemplation of this secret, thou canst not be contained in the world. He who is content with his existence (as forming part of the great whole) loses his individuality and becomes free. Be eternally content with thy friend, that thou mayest be in Him as the rose in its calyx.
