O earth of the Highland, mayst thou be a blessed highland! May the rain-clouds water thee abundantly with shower on shower! And may he who has greeted thee for fifty years greet thee once and twice and then once again! I crossed every desert and wilderness to meet her, riding on the big-humped she-camel and the old dromedary, Until the lightning shone from the direction of al-Ghaḍá, and its coming in the night has increased the passion that I felt before.

✨ To meditate on today
According to Ibn Arabî in the Tarjumân al-Ashwâq, the poet blesses the highland of Arabia where his beloved dwells and crosses every desert to reach her, until a flash of lightning seen far off, toward the place called al-Ghaḍá, rekindles his love; for him, this journey is the soul’s journey toward God. Today, bless in thought the place where someone you love lives, and wish them peace like a gentle rain.
