Lesson 190

Passion caused sweet and joyous words to be uttered between us without a tongue.

Excerpt

Had you seen us at Ráma proffering each other cups of passion without fingers, Whilst passion caused sweet and joyous words to be uttered between us without a tongue, You would have seen a state in which the understanding disappears—Yemen and ʿIráq embracing together.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Ibn Arabi, an Andalusian mystic, love unites beings as opposite as Yemen and Iraq — two distant lands that stand here for the poet and his beloved, brought together at Rama — and it speaks without words, beyond what the mind understands. Today, offer someone very different from you a smile or a kind look, without saying anything, and feel that silent bond.
