Majnun would gladly wear brocade and cloth of gold; but he loves this skin, by means of which he can please Laïla. I was able to catch sight of my beloved beneath this sheepskin; how could I wish to have any other garment than this? Beneath this skin my heart received tidings of love; and, since I cannot attain to the essence of the thing, this skin enables me to form some idea of it.

✨ To meditate on today
According to Attar, Majnun, the “madman of love” for Layla in Arabic and Persian poetry and a figure of the mystical lover, prefers a simple sheepskin to all garments of gold, for it was under this humble covering, mingling with the flock, that he could catch sight of his beloved. Today, choose a humble and discreet gesture (a service, an attention no one sees) that brings you closer to what you love most, and do it without seeking to be noticed.
