Lesson 48

I store up in my heart for ever the lovely form of Vitthala.

Excerpt

Why do I care where the Ganges meets the ocean? My desire is to allay my thirst. I store up in my heart for ever the lovely form of Vitthala. It is the butter that men want: who cares to store up butter-milk?

✨ To meditate on today

According to Tukaram, it does not matter where the Ganges meets the ocean: what he wants is to quench his thirst, and he keeps forever in his heart the lovely form of Vitthala, God as He is worshipped at Pandharpur; just as one keeps the butter and not the butter-milk left over, he keeps what is essential. Today, before starting a conversation or opening a screen, ask yourself “Is this the butter or the butter-milk?”, and choose to feed your heart with what truly matters.
