Lesson 309

How wonderful, how marvelous is the great might and power of the Tathāgata!

Excerpt

And lo! the streamlet, which, stirred up by wheels, had become muddy, when the venerable Ānanda came up to it, flowed clear and bright and free from all turbidity. And he thought: "How wonderful, how marvelous is the great might and power of the Tathāgata!"

✨ To meditate on today

According to The Gospel of Buddha, the streamlet that cart wheels had made muddy flows clear when Ānanda, the disciple of the Buddha (the Tathāgata, “the one who has thus come”), comes to draw water for his master: the peaceful presence of the Buddha lets the disturbance settle. Today, when your mind is agitated, do not stir the water further: wait a moment in silence, breathe, and let clarity return by itself.
