Lesson 307

This doctrine has but one taste, the taste of Deliverance.

Excerpt

Just as, O Bhikkhus, the Great Ocean has but one taste, the taste of salt, even so, O Bhikkhus, this doctrine has but one taste, the taste of Deliverance; and as, O Bhikkhus, this doctrine has but one taste, the taste of deliverance; this is the sixth strange and marvellous condition in the discipline of the Law, perceiving which the Bhikkhus rejoice in the discipline of the Law.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Udâna, the Buddha compares his teaching to the Great Ocean: just as the ocean everywhere has but one taste, that of salt, his whole doctrine has but one taste, that of Deliverance, freedom from suffering; the Bhikkhus, his monks, rejoice in it. Today, in each of your activities, even the most ordinary, look for that same taste: a moment when you let go of a tension, an expectation or a grudge.
