I am a Son of God. And can I be another thing as well? Did God create the mortal and corruptible? What use has God's beloved Son for what must die? And yet a neutral thing does not see death, for thoughts of fear are not invested there, nor is a mockery of love bestowed upon it. Its neutrality protects it while it has a use. And afterwards, without a purpose, it is laid aside. It is not sick or old or hurt. It is but functionless, unneeded and cast off. Let me not see it more than this today; of service for a while and fit to serve, to keep its usefulness while it can serve, and then to be replaced for greater good.
My body, Father, cannot be Your Son. And what is not created cannot be sinful or sinless; neither good nor bad. Let me, then, use this dream to help Your plan that we awaken from all dreams we made.
Your body is a neutral tool, give it no more importance.
Having moved beyond fear (Lesson 293), this lesson offers you a liberating perspective on the body. In the curriculum, it is an important clarification as you approach the end. You are a Son of God. Can you also be something else? Did God create the mortal and corruptible? No. The body is merely a neutral thing, a temporary tool. As long as it is useful, its neutrality protects it. Then, when it no longer serves, it is set aside, neither sick, nor old, nor injured.
The central idea is that the body is neither sinful nor sinless, neither good nor bad. It is not your son, nor are you its. It is simply a dream you use to help God’s plan, which is to awaken you from all dreams. Do not give it more importance than a tool. Do not fear it, worship it, or fight it. Use it to serve, to communicate, to love, and when its usefulness ends, let it go without regret.
This lesson is part of the final preparation (291–300). It prepares for Lesson 295 (the Holy Spirit sees through me) and those that follow. It echoes Lesson 248 (suffering is not part of me), Lesson 250 (do not see yourself as limited), and Lesson 277 (the Son of God is not bound by any law). The body regains its proper place: a neutral instrument, not an identity.
To practice this today, whenever you feel bodily discomfort, fatigue, or concern for your health, say: "This body is a neutral tool. It is not me. I use it for a time, then I let it go." Do not neglect your body, care for it as a valuable tool, but stop identifying with it. You are not your body. You are the Son of God who uses a body for a time, for a sacred purpose.
You have spent so much time believing you were your body. But you are far more than that. The body is your means of communication, not your home. Your home is in God, eternal and free.
