Lesson 281
Lesson 281

I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts.

Father, Your Son is perfect. When he thinks that he is hurt in any way, it is because he has forgotten who he is. And that he is as You created him. Your Thoughts can only bring me happiness. If ever I am sad or hurt or ill, I have forgotten what You think, and put my little, meaningless ideas in place of where Your Thoughts belong, and where They are. I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts. The Thoughts I think with You can only bless. The Thoughts I think with You alone are true.

I will not hurt myself today. For I am far beyond all pain. My Father placed me safe in Heaven, watching over me. And I would not attack the Son He loves, for what He loves is mine to love as well.

✨ Summary & practice

You can be hurt only by your own thoughts.

After recognizing the absence of limits (Lesson 280), this lesson addresses the source of all harm. Within the curriculum, it is a liberating teaching. The Son of God is perfect. When you think you are hurt in any way, it is because you have forgotten who you are. The Thoughts of God can bring you only happiness. If ever you are sad, hurt, or ill, you have placed your small, insignificant ideas where the Thoughts of God should be. You can be hurt only by your own thoughts.

The central idea is that only the thoughts you think with God are true and can only bless. Thoughts you think alone, without God, are the sole cause of all suffering. The narrator chooses not to hurt himself today. He is far beyond all pain. His Father has placed him safe in Heaven and watches over him. He will not attack the Son whom God loves, for what God loves is also given to him to love.

This lesson builds upon the lessons of freedom (277–280) and prepares for Lessons 282–285 on love, identity, and holiness. It echoes Lesson 248 (suffering is not part of me), Lesson 249 (forgiveness ends all suffering), and Lesson 268 (let all things be exactly as they are). The source of pain is not the external world but the mind that has forgotten God.

To live this lesson today, when you feel a painful emotion, anger, sadness, fear, frustration, pause and ask: "What thought have I believed that is causing this pain?" Identify the thought, then ask: "Am I thinking this thought with God, or alone?" If you are thinking it alone, let it go. Replace it with a thought you can think with God. Gradually, you will find that pain disappears when the thought that caused it is released.

The world cannot hurt you, only your thoughts can. And your thoughts, you can change. Today, choose the thoughts you think with God, and pain will have no place within you.
