Your Self governs the universe; nothing happens by chance.
After discovering that you are the Son of God (lesson 252), this lesson reveals the cosmic scope of that truth. In the curriculum, it is a moment of empowerment and responsibility. If you are truly the Son of God, then nothing can happen to you without your asking. Even in this world, you govern your destiny. What occurs is what you desire; what does not occur is what you do not want. This is a radical declaration of sovereignty.
The central idea is that you are not a victim of circumstances. It is impossible for anything to happen to you that you have not asked for. By accepting this, you are led beyond this world, toward your creations, children of your will, in Heaven where your holy Self resides. The Self that governs the universe is nothing but the Will of God in union with yours. Your will can only offer joyful consent to His.
This lesson flows directly from the revelation of identity (252). It prepares the next, where every voice but God’s falls silent (254). If your Self governs the universe, it becomes crucial to listen only to the Voice that matters. Lessons 255–256 will deepen this theme of choice: you choose perfect peace, and God becomes your only goal. Everything is connected in this logical progression.
To apply this lesson today, when something unexpected happens, good or bad, pause and say: “I asked for this in some way. What is the hidden gift here?” Instead of reacting as a victim, ask how this event serves your return to God. Every situation then becomes an opportunity for learning, not misfortune. You reclaim your power by recognizing that nothing happens by chance.
You do not endure life, you create it. Every moment is an expression of your will united with God’s. Do not fear this power; it is your natural inheritance.
