I sought for many things, and found despair. Now do I seek but one, for in that one is all I need, and only what I need. All that I sought before I needed not, and did not even want. My only need I did not recognize. But now I see that I need only truth. In that, all needs are satisfied, all cravings end, all hopes are finally fulfilled and dreams are gone. Now have I everything that I could need. Now have I everything that I could want. And now at last I find myself at peace.
And for that peace, our Father, we give thanks. What we denied ourselves You have restored, and only that is what we really want.
After so many futile searches, you need only the truth.
This lesson marks a turning point in your journey. After moving through all the work on vision and identity, you arrive at a liberating realization. In the curriculum, it is a moment of reckoning: you have sought many things in life, success, love, recognition, security, and often found despair. But now, a clarity emerges: you need only one thing, and that thing is the truth.
The central idea is disarmingly simple. Everything you once sought, you never truly needed. Your only real need, you did not recognize. But now you see that in truth, all needs are met, all thirsts end, all hopes are fulfilled. Dreams fade away. You have everything you could ever need. You have everything you could ever want. And at last, you find peace.
This lesson builds on the previous one, where you learned not to see yourself as limited (250). It opens the way to the following lessons on divine identity (252–255). The theme of the single need for truth resonates throughout the second half of the curriculum. It prepares you for lesson 259, where you will remember there is no sin, and lesson 260, where you will remember that God created you.
To live this lesson today, take inventory of everything you still seek: recognition, money, a relationship, health, success. Then, for each thing, sincerely ask yourself: “Do I truly need this, or do I only need the truth?” Let the answer arise on its own. Each time a desire stirs, remind yourself: “I need nothing except the truth.” And observe the peace that settles within.
You have searched so long. Today, lay down all your futile quests. The one thing you were truly seeking has been waiting for you all along. It is called the truth, and it is already within you.
