Let me behold the Son of God today, and witness to his glory. Let me not try to obscure the holy light in him, and see his strength diminished and reduced to frailty; nor perceive the lacks in him with which I would attack his sovereignty.
He is Your Son, my Father. And today I would behold his gentleness instead of my illusions. He is what I am, and as I see him so I see myself. Today I would see truly, that this day I may at last identify with him.
Do not see yourself as limited; you are far greater.
After seeing forgiveness transform the world (lesson 249), this lesson invites you to turn this forgiving gaze upon yourself. In the curriculum, this is a delicate step because you are used to seeing yourself as small, limited, fragile. This lesson asks you to let all that go: behold the Son of God in his glory, without attempting to dim his light. Do not see him diminished or weakened, for that would be to attack his sovereignty.
The central idea is that the way you see your brother determines the way you see yourself. By contemplating his gentleness and strength instead of your illusions about him, you contemplate your own true being. “As I see him, so I see myself.” You are invited to truly see today, so that you may finally identify with the Son of God. Your perception of others is the mirror of your own identity.
This lesson bridges the series on forgiveness (247–249) and the series on identity beginning at lesson 251. It shows that forgiving others and rediscovering yourself are inseparable. Lesson 252 will reveal that the Son of God is your Identity, and this one prepares the ground. Lessons 253–255 will deepen the power of this reclaimed identity.
To apply this today, choose someone you tend to see as weak, limited, or imperfect. Consciously look upon them as the Son of God they are, without any limits. Then, apply the same vision to yourself. Each time you catch yourself thinking “I can’t,” “I’m too…,” “I lack…,” correct yourself: “I am the Son of God. I am not limited.” Repeat it until the belief takes root.
You are far vaster than all the limits you impose on yourself. See yourself as God sees you, and you will be free.
