Had you yesterday called me an ox, I should have considered myself an ox. Had you called me a horse, I should have considered myself a horse. For if men class you in accordance with truth, and you reject the classification, you only double the reproach. My humility is natural humility. It is not humility for humility's sake.

✨ To meditate on today
According to Chuang Tzu, Lao Tzu, first blamed and then visited by a man who came to apologise, replies that he no longer cares to be called wise or learned: whether he is praised or called an ox or a horse, he lets people talk, without defending himself. Today, if a remark hurts or flatters you, don’t reply right away: let it pass and stay at peace with who you are.
