Lesson 238

Rulers were mere beacons, while the people were free as the wild deer.

Excerpt

Rulers were mere beacons, while the people were free as the wild deer. They were upright without being conscious of duty to their neighbours. They loved one another without being conscious of charity. They were true without being conscious of loyalty. They were honest without being conscious of good faith. They acted freely in all things without recognising obligations to any one.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Chuang Tzu, in the times of simplicity, those who governed protected the people as the branches of great trees give their shade, and did good simply, without even knowing the word “goodness” or expecting anything in return. Today, be like that tree for someone: offer your help or your listening without expecting thanks.
