Lesson 89

Trust in the Eternal at all times.

Excerpt

While some religious and moral duties are only obligatory at special times and in special circumstances, these duties of the heart, taught by Reason, Scripture, or Tradition, are incumbent upon us continually, all the days of our life and at every moment. As the Psalmist says: “Trust in the Eternal at all times.” Nor, for instance, can there be a moment of our lives when it is not incumbent upon us to remove hatred and jealousy from our hearts.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Bahya ibn Paquda, an eleventh-century Jewish philosopher, the duties of the heart, such as trust in God, know neither hour nor place: they can be lived at every moment, for example by removing hatred and jealousy from one’s heart. Today, each time you change activity, look for a moment at what dwells in your heart and let go of any resentment or jealousy that may have slipped in.
