Lesson 210

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Excerpt

And he should meditate also on the many ways in which one man can help another; and consider that he should love for others what he loves for himself, and hate for others what he hates for himself, rejoicing in their joy and grieving at their sorrow. And he should be full of compassion for them, and ward off from them, to the utmost of his power, anything that may injure them; as it is said (Levit. xix.), β€œAnd thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

✨ To meditate on today

According to Bahya ibn Paquda, in the Duties of the Heart, loving your neighbour as yourself means wanting for others the good you want for yourself, rejoicing in their joy, grieving at their sorrow and protecting them from whatever might harm them. Today, choose one person and offer them a good thing you would like to receive yourself: a word of encouragement, a helping hand, some of your time.
