Lesson 90

There is a sixth sense, or faculty of perception, implanted in the heart.

Excerpt

Love may be defined as an inclination to that which is pleasant. This is apparent in the case of the five senses, each of which may be said to love that which gives it delight; thus the eye loves beautiful forms, the ear music, etc. This is a kind of love we share with the animals. But there is a sixth sense, or faculty of perception, implanted in the heart, which animals do not possess, through which we become aware of spiritual beauty and excellence.

✨ To meditate on today

According to al-Ghazâlî in The Alchemy of Happiness, love is an inclination toward what pleases: our five senses love beautiful forms and music, but the heart has a sixth sense that perceives spiritual beauty. Today, take a moment of prayer or silence to taste this inner beauty, then look for it in an act of kindness that you witness or perform.
