I am like a wandering atom; but, in the well into which I have fallen, I grasp the rope with my hand. I emerge through the opening of this well, and at last take possession of the shining world of existence. As long as my soul has not come upon my lips, I shall preserve my spirit in these sentiments.

According to Attar, in the prayer that concludes his poem, the soul that has fallen to the bottom of a well grasps the rope held out to it and climbs back toward the shining world; he promises to keep these sentiments "as long as his soul has not come upon his lips", that is, until his last breath. Today, find the "rope" that helps you rise when you are low, a prayer, a friend, a word, and grasp it with trust.
