Lesson 334

It is an essential characteristic of the good, Garur, to be charitable to others, in thought, word and deed.

Excerpt

It is an essential characteristic of the good, Garur, to be charitable to others, in thought, word and deed. The good take pains to help their neighbours, but wicked wretches to trouble them. The good in their compassionateness resemble the birch tree, and constantly submit to the greatest distress in order to benefit others.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Ramayana of Tulsidas, the wise crow Kakabhusundi teaches Garur, the king of birds, that good people are recognised by their kindness in thought, word and deed: like the birch tree whose bark is taken for writing, they accept to give of themselves for the good of others. Today, choose one person and be good to them in all three ways: a kind thought, a gentle word, a concrete gesture.
