The disciples asked Him: “Wouldst Thou have us fast? How ought we to pray? Should we give to charity? What diet ought we to observe?” I answered: “When you go into a region and walk about the countryside, and the people welcome you, eat what they serve you. After all, what enters your mouth will not defile you; rather, it is what comes out of your mouth that will reveal you.”

According to the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus invites His disciples to simply eat what they are served when they are welcomed, for what matters is not what enters the mouth, but the words that come out of it and reveal the heart. Today, before speaking in a tense moment, take a breath and choose a gentle word.
