Lesson 218

Jesus, as was His wont, slept in my little barque.

Excerpt

Jesus, as was His wont, slept in my little barque. How rarely do souls suffer Him to sleep in peace! This Good Master is so wearied with continually making fresh advances that He eagerly avails Himself of the repose I offer Him, and, no doubt, He will sleep on until my great and everlasting retreat; but, instead of being grieved at this, I am glad.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, who was going through a time of dryness in prayer, Jesus seemed to be asleep in her “little boat,” as during the storm in the Gospel; instead of complaining, she rejoices to offer Him a heart where He can rest. Today, if your prayer seems empty, do not worry: simply remain in silence for a few minutes, offering your heart as a place of rest for Jesus.
