Lesson 142

Deep peace inundates the soul when it soars above mere natural sentiments.

Excerpt

For instance: when starting to paint, if I find the brushes in disorder, and a ruler or penknife gone, I feel inclined to lose patience, and have to keep a firm hold over myself not to betray my feelings. Of course I may ask for these needful things, and if I do so humbly I am not disobeying Our Lord's command. I am then like the poor who hold out their hands for the necessaries of life, and, if refused, are not surprised, since no one owes them anything. Deep peace inundates the soul when it soars above mere natural sentiments. There is no joy equal to that which is shared by the truly poor in spirit.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, even a misplaced paintbrush can make us lose patience; but asking humbly for what we need, without bitterness and without demanding, like a poor person who believes nothing is owed to them, leaves a deep peace and joy in the soul. Today, when something you need is missing or someone has taken your place, ask gently, or simply let it go, and notice the peace this gives you.
