Lesson 81

Mindful only of the services which they had ministered unto him.

Excerpt

At that time the five bhikkhus dwelt in the Deer Park at Benares, and the Blessed One rose and journeyed to their abode, not thinking of their unkindness in having left him at a time when he was most in need of their sympathy and help, but mindful only of the services which they had ministered unto him, and pitying them for the austerities which they practised in vain.

โœจ To meditate on today

According to The Gospel of Buddha, the five bhikkhus (monks), his former companions in austerity, had abandoned the Buddha when he most needed them; yet he went to them first, without resentment, remembering only the good they had done him. Today, think of someone who disappointed you, recall a service they once did you, and let this memory soften the way you see them.
