Lesson 346

I am free from anger, free from stubbornness.

Excerpt

‘I am free from anger, free from stubbornness,’—so said Bhagavat,—‘I am abiding for one night near the banks of the Mahi (river), my house is uncovered, the fire (of passions) is extinguished: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!’

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Sutta-Nipāta, the herdsman Dhaniya rejoices that his house is covered and his fire kindled before the storm; the Buddha answers that his own dwelling is roofless, but that the fire of the passions is extinguished in him: free from anger, he can let the rain come. Today, when a “rain” arrives (a setback, a criticism, bad news), say inwardly “let it rain” and welcome it with a heart free from anger.
