Lesson 302

Hard times try the souls of men and teach them righteousness and charity.

Excerpt

There is help for him who has compassion on others, but there is no help for thee so long as thou clingest to thine own self alone. Hard times try the souls of men and teach them righteousness and charity.

โœจ To meditate on today

According to the Gospel of Buddha, during an epidemic, a poet who followed the Buddha stays calm and cares for the sick; to a man gnawed by fear for himself, he answers that comfort comes by opening to the suffering of others, for hard times teach righteousness and charity. Today, if a worry turns you in on yourself, make a concrete gesture for someone going through a trial (a call, an errand, a word), then notice what becomes of your own fear.
