Lesson 284

Do not ask about descent, but ask about conduct.

Excerpt

Do not ask about descent, but ask about conduct; from wood, it is true, fire is born; likewise a firm Muni, although belonging to a low family, may become noble, when restrained by humility.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Sutta-Nipâta, the Buddha teaches a brahmin that a person’s worth does not come from birth but from conduct: just as fire can be born from any wood, a Muni (a silent sage) of humble origin becomes noble through humility. Today, before judging someone by their origin, their job or their appearance, look rather at what they do and how they treat others.
