Lesson 214

Because, O monks, that monk seeth the Law, and seeing the Law, he seeth me.

Excerpt

‘But if a monk should dwell even a hundred leagues from me and be not covetous, nor with keen passion for Lusts, nor malevolent in thought, nor corrupt in his mind’s aspiration, (but) heedful in memory, mindful, self-composed, noble in thought, with his senses cultivated, then is he near to me and I to him.’ ‘Why?’ ‘Because, O monks, that monk seeth the Law, and seeing the Law, he seeth me.’

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Itivuttaka, being close to the Buddha is not a matter of distance: the one who lives far from him, but keeps a heart free of greed and ill will, attentive and noble, is near him, for he sees the Law (the Dhamma, the truth he teaches). Today, when you feel far from peace, come back to a kind and attentive thought: that is where you find it again.
