Lesson 156

I must do for another what I do for myself.

Excerpt

What joy is to me, it is to another; What pain is to me, it is to another. I must do for another what I do for myself. Is not the body composed of parts? Is it not regarded as “one,” and, as such, protected and served by all its members as though they were united? Likewise, in this world of living beings, which is manifold, pain and pleasure are common to all beings.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Shantideva, the joy and pain of others are as real as our own: just as the members of one body take care of each other, we can do for others what we do for ourselves. Today, offer someone the very care you give yourself when you are tired or worried (a moment of rest, a hot drink, a listening ear).
