Lesson 3
Lesson 3

I do not understand anything I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place].

Apply this idea in the same way as the previous ones, without making distinctions of any kind. Whatever you see becomes a proper subject for applying the idea. Be sure that you do not question the suitability of anything for the application of the idea. These are not exercises in judgement. Anything is suitable if you see it. Some of the things you see may have emotionally charged meaning for you. Try to lay such feelings aside, and merely use these things exactly as you would anything else.

The point of the exercises is to help you clear your mind of all past associations, to see things exactly as they appear to you now, and to realize how little you really understand about them. It is therefore essential that you keep a perfectly open mind, unhampered by judgement, in selecting the things to which the idea for the day is to be applied. For this purpose one thing is like another;equally suitable and therefore equally useful.

✨ Summary & practice

When the mind opens to its own ignorance

After accepting that nothing you see means anything, you arrive at this third lesson, which confronts you with another truth just as unsettling: you do not understand anything you see. This may feel like a slap in the face, I know. You’ve spent your entire life believing you understand the world around you. But the Course gently tells you that all this understanding is built on sand. Recognizing that you do not understand is the only doorway to true understanding.

The central idea, 'I do not understand anything I see,' applies without the slightest distinction. You look around and apply the idea to everything that catches your attention, even things that carry deep emotional significance for you. And that’s where it hurts, isn’t it? It’s easy to say a chair means nothing, but what about a photo of a loved one? The Course asks you to set aside these feelings and use these things exactly like anything else.

See how this lesson continues the first ones. Lesson 1 removed the meaning you projected onto things. Lesson 2 told you that you were the one who gave that meaning. Now, Lesson 3 goes even further: even the understanding you believe you have is illusory. It’s a logical and relentless progression. And this sequence prepares the ground for Lesson 4, where you’ll apply the same idea to your thoughts rather than objects.

To practice today, look around and apply the idea to everything you see without any discrimination. Don’t ask yourself if something is 'suitable' for the exercise. Everything you see is suitable. Keep your mind perfectly open and free of all judgment. And remember: one thing is like another, equally suitable and therefore equally useful for your awakening.
