Lesson 289
Lesson 289

The past is over. It can touch me not.

Unless the past is over in my mind, the real world must escape my sight. For I am really looking nowhere; seeing but what is not there. How can I then perceive the world forgiveness offers? This the past was made to hide, for this the world that can be looked on only now. It has no past. For what can be forgiven but the past, and if it is forgiven it is gone.

Father, let me not look upon a past that is not there. For You have offered me Your own replacement, in a present world the past has left untouched and free of sin. Here is the end of guilt. And here am I made ready for Your final step. Shall I demand that You wait longer for Your Son to find the loveliness You planned to be the end of all his dreams and all his pain?

✨ Summary & practice

The past is over, it cannot touch you.

After learning to forgive your brother, this lesson dissolves the prison of the past. In the curriculum, it is a fundamental liberation. As long as the past is present in your mind, the real world escapes your sight. You look nowhere and see only what is not there. How could you perceive the world that forgiveness offers? The past was made to hide that world, for it can only be seen now. It has no past. For what is forgiveness but letting the past disappear?

The central idea is that the past no longer exists. What is forgiven has vanished. God offers you a replacement, a present world that the past has left intact and free of sin. Here is the end of guilt. Here you are made ready for God’s final step. Why ask God to wait longer before His Son finds the beauty designed as the end of all his dreams and all his pain? The past is truly over, and it cannot touch you if you refuse to look at it.

This lesson builds upon the previous one (forgiving your brother) and prepares for lesson 290 (my present happiness). It echoes lesson 247 (forgiveness is vision), lesson 249 (forgiveness ends all suffering), and lesson 268 (let all things be). Liberation from the past is the work of forgiveness. Without past, only the present remains, and the present is the only place where God can be found.

To practice this today, whenever a painful memory arises, say: 'This is not here. The past is over. I choose to look at the present God offers me now.' Do not fight the memory, it simply has no more power over you. Look at the person before you, the task at hand. The present is here, full of God’s peace.
