This is the thought that leads the way to You, and brings me to my goal. I cannot come to You without my brother. And to know my Source, I first must recognize what You created one with me. My brother's is the hand that leads me on the way to You. His sins are in the past along with mine. And I am saved because the past is gone. Let me not cherish it within my heart, or I will lose the way to walk to You. My brother is my Savior. Let me not attack the Savior You have given me. But let me honor him who bears Your Name, and so remember that It is my own.
Forgive me, then, today. And you will know you have forgiven me if you behold your brother in the light of holiness. He cannot be less holy than can I, and you can not be holier than he.
Forgive your brother his past, he is your savior.
After re-centering your goal on God alone (lesson 287), this lesson shows you the practical path to reach it: forgiving your brother. In the curriculum, it is a key lesson on relationship. You cannot come to God without your brother. To know your Source, you must first recognize what God created as one with you. Your brother’s hand guides you on the path that leads to You. His sins are in the past with yours, and you are saved because the past is gone.
The central idea is that your brother is your savior. Do not attack the savior God has given you. Honor the one who bears God’s Name, and you will remember it is also yours. Mutual forgiveness is the key: forgive your brother, and you will know you are forgiven. Do not cherish his past mistakes, or you will lose the way to God. Contemplate your brother in the light of holiness, he cannot be less holy than you, and you cannot be more holy than him.
This lesson builds upon the previous one (God is my only goal) and prepares for lesson 289 (the past is over) and lesson 290 (my present happiness). It echoes lesson 246 (to love the Father is to love His Son), lesson 247 (without forgiveness I remain blind), and lesson 266 (my holy Self abides in you). Forgiving your brother is not an option, it is the path itself.
In practice, today, choose someone you have not fully forgiven, perhaps someone who hurt you, or simply someone you judge. Look at them and say in your heart: 'You are my savior. I forgive you your past, as I would have my own forgiven.' Each time the memory of their offense returns, remember that the past is gone. You do not need to forget the events, but to release the emotional charge that keeps them present.
Your brother is not your enemy. He is the one who helps you cross the bridge to God. Take his hand today, forgive him completely, and cross together.
