Father, I made an image of myself, and it is this I call the Son of God. Yet is creation as it always was, for Your creation is unchangeable. Let me not worship idols. I am he my Father loves. His holiness remains the light of Heaven and the Love of God. Is not what is beloved of You secure? Is not the light of Heaven infinite? Is not Your Son my true Identity, when You created everything that is?
Now are we one in shared Identity, with God our Father as our only Source, and everything created part of us. And so we offer blessing to all things, uniting lovingly with all the world, which our forgiveness has made one with us.

The image you have of yourself is not your true Identity.
After confronting the fear of love (Lesson 282), this lesson distinguishes the image you have made from your true Identity. Within the curriculum, it is an essential clarification. You have made an image of yourself, and it is this image you call the Son of God. But creation remains as it always was, for God’s creation is unchangeable. Do not worship idols. You are the one whom the Father loves. Your holiness remains the light of Heaven and the Love of God.
The central idea is that the identity you have constructed, based on your body, your history, your roles, your successes and failures, is not your true Identity. Your true Identity remains in God. What is loved by God is safe. The light of Heaven is infinite. The Son of God is your true Identity, for God created all that is. Now, all are one in a shared Identity, with God as the only Source. Through forgiveness, the whole world becomes one with you.
This lesson is part of the series of Lessons 281–285 on thoughts, love, and identity. It prepares for Lessons 285–290 on holiness, silence, purpose, and forgiveness. It echoes Lesson 252 (the Son of God is my Identity), Lesson 260 (God created me), and Lesson 262 (perceive unity). True Identity is not to be built but recognized.
To practice this today, become aware of the image you hold of yourself. Notice the labels: "I am..." (lazy, capable, anxious, kind, etc.). For each label, ask: "Is this image my true Identity, or an idol I have made?" Then let it go. Next, contemplate what remains when all images are gone. What remains is your true Identity, unchangeable and eternal. You do not need to be anything other than what God created.
You have spent so much time crafting an identity. But the only identity that matters does not need to be crafted, it only needs to be recognized. You are God’s beloved Son. That is all.
