I have indeed misunderstood the world, because I laid my sins on it, and saw them looking back at me. How fierce they seemed! And how deceived was I to think that what I feared was in the world, instead of in my mind alone. Today I see the world in the celestial gentleness with which creation shines. There is no fear in it. Let no appearance of my sins obscure the light of Heaven, shining on the world. What is reflected here is in God's Mind. The images I see reflect my thoughts. Yet is my mind at one with God's. And so I can perceive creation's gentleness.
In quiet would I look upon the world, which but reflects Your Thoughts and mine as well. Let me remember that they are the same, and I will see creation's gentleness.
The world is not what you thought, it is gentleness and light.
After realizing the omnipresence of God’s Love (lesson 264), this lesson corrects your perception of the world. In the curriculum, it is a moment of deep healing. You misunderstood the world because you projected your sins onto it and saw them staring back at you. They seemed fierce! But you were wrong: what you feared was not in the world, but only in your mind. Today, you see the world in the heavenly gentleness of creation.
The central idea is that the images you see reflect your thoughts. If you see a frightening world, it is because fearful thoughts are in your mind. But your mind is one with God’s. Therefore, you can perceive the gentleness of creation. There is no fear in the world. Let no appearance of your sins obscure the light of Heaven shining upon the world. In stillness, you look upon the world reflecting God’s Thoughts, and yours, for they are the same.
This lesson builds on the entire series 260–264: identity, security, vision. It prepares lesson 266, where you recognize your holy Self abiding in every Son of God. It connects with the lessons on judgment (243): you have stopped judging, and now you see the world as it truly is. The gentleness of creation replaces the ferocity you projected. The world becomes a place of peace.
Practically today, when you see something that seems negative, a bad news story, an angry person, a sad event, pause and ask: 'What thought am I projecting onto this?' Then choose to withdraw your projection. Let the gentleness of creation appear behind the image you had imposed. See how, without your projection, the same situation feels lighter, more peaceful. This is how the world reveals itself to you.
The world is not your enemy. It is a mirror of your thoughts. Cleanse your thoughts, and you will see a world of gentleness and light welcoming you.
