Sin is the only thought that makes the goal of God seem unobtainable. What else could blind us to the obvious, and make the strange and the distorted seem more clear? What else but sin engenders our attacks? What else but sin could be the source of guilt, demanding punishment and suffering? And what but this could be the source of fear, obscuring God's creation;giving love the attributes of fear and of attack?
Father, I would not be insane today. I would not be afraid of love, nor seek for refuge in its opposite. For love can have no opposite. You are the Source of everything that is. And everything that is remains with You and You with it.
Remember that there is no sin, it is an impossible thought.
This lesson confronts the root of all your fears and judgments. In the curriculum, after recentering your goal on God (lesson 258), you now face the one thought that makes this goal seem unreachable: the thought of sin. It is the ultimate barrier. Sin is not a reality, it is a single thought that obscures everything and makes you believe God is far from you.
The central idea is that sin is the sole source of all the problems you perceive. It is the thought that blinds you to the obvious, that breeds attack, that is the root of guilt demanding punishment and suffering. It is the source of fear that darkens God’s creation. But today, you choose not to be insane. You choose not to fear love, because love has no opposite. God is the Source of all that is, and all that is remains with Him.
This lesson is crucial because it prepares lesson 260 (remember that God created you) and all the final lessons culminating in the celebration of the Son of God. It connects with the previous lessons on purpose: if your goal is God, but you believe in sin, you believe you are separated from God. Dissolving the belief in sin is dissolving the separation itself. All the lessons on forgiveness (247–249) were preparations for this realization.
To practice this today, each time you feel guilty, ashamed, or unworthy, pause and say: 'This feeling comes from the belief in sin. But there is no sin.' Each time you judge someone else, remember: 'Sin does not exist. What I see is not sin, it is a call for love.' Gradually, you will see the emotional charge of judgment dissolve. Without belief in sin, only love remains.
Sin is just a thought you believed. Today, choose not to believe it anymore. You are innocent, you always have been, and nothing can change that.
