Lesson 248
Lesson 248

Whatever suffers is not part of me.

I have disowned the truth. Now let me be as faithful in disowning falsity. Whatever suffers is not part of me. What grieves is not myself. What is in pain is but illusion in my mind. What dies was never living in reality, and did but mock the truth about myself. Now I disown self-concepts and deceits and lies about the holy Son of God. Now am I ready to accept him back as God created him, and as he is.

Father, my ancient love for You returns, and lets me love Your Son again as well. Father, I am as You created me. Now is Your Love remembered, and my own. Now do I understand that they are one.

✨ Summary & practice

Suffering is not you; it is only an illusion.

After understanding that forgiveness is the means to clear vision (lesson 247), this lesson goes even further. It confronts a deep identification: with suffering. You may be accustomed to defining yourself by your pains, sorrows, and griefs. The curriculum now asks you to disown all of this. This is not insensitivity or denial, but a profound recognition that your true Self cannot suffer.

The central idea is radical. You have disowned the truth, it is time to disown falsehood with equal faith. What suffers is not part of you. What grieves is not you. What hurts is only an illusion in your mind. What dies was never truly alive. You disown all false concepts of self to accept the Son of God as he was created. The ancient love for the Father returns, and you understand it is one with your own love.

This lesson fits within the sequence of lessons on forgiveness (247, 249). It prepares the next, where forgiveness ends all suffering (249). Together, they form a coherent block: first, forgiveness grants vision; then, it dissolves identification with suffering. It also links with lesson 260, where you will remember that God created you. If God created you perfect, suffering can only be an illusion foreign to your true being.

To practice this today, each time you feel physical or emotional pain, pause and say: β€œThis is not me. Whatever suffers is not part of me.” Do not resist the sensation, but disown the identification with it. Observe it as a passing illusion in your mind. Gradually, you will discover that suffering loses its grip when you stop identifying with it.

You are far greater than your pain. The Son of God that you are has never suffered and never will. Remember Who you truly are.
