Lesson 84

If virtue takes no outward form, man will not be able to keep aloof from it.

Excerpt

"In a water-level," said Confucius, "the water is in a most perfect state of repose. Let that be your model. The water remains quietly within, and does not overflow. It is from the cultivation of such harmony that virtue results. And if virtue takes no outward form, man will not be able to keep aloof from it."

โœจ To meditate on today

According to Chuang Tzu, Confucius compares hidden virtue to the calm of a pond that draws the eye: a deep inner peace, without show or speeches, naturally attracts beings. Today, in a tense moment, choose to be the calm water: speak more slowly, lower your voice a little, and watch the calm spread around you.
