Lesson 275

The sun and moon shine.

Excerpt

"Be passive," said Shun, "like the virtue of God. The sun and moon shine; the four seasons revolve; day and night alternate; clouds come and rain falls." "Alas!" cried Yao, "what a muddle I have been making. You are in accord with God; I am in accord with man."

โœจ To meditate on today

According to Chuang Tzu, Shun reminds the emperor Yao (two wise legendary sovereigns of ancient China) that Heaven brings peace to all things simply by shining, like the sun and the moon, which just shine so that the seasons turn; Yao then understands that he has been too agitated and too eager to please. Today, instead of fretting to do well or to be liked, simply do what needs to be done, calmly, like the shining sun.
