Lesson 221

Abstaining from speech marks him who is obeying the spontaneity of his nature.

Excerpt

Abstaining from speech marks him who is obeying the spontaneity of his nature. A violent wind does not last for a whole morning; a sudden rain does not last for the whole day. To whom is it that these two things are owing? To heaven and earth.

โœจ To meditate on today

According to Lao-tzu, whoever speaks little attains non-action, that is, the quiet action that follows nature; even heaven and earth do not make the gale or the downpour last. Today, in a moment of agitation or anger, speak less, let the storm pass like a wind that does not last the whole morning, and wait for calm before answering.
