Lesson 314

Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, does on earth is prompted by a supreme mystery.

Excerpt

Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, does on earth is prompted by a supreme mystery. Since Abraham was not properly attached to the Holy One, blessed be He, He said to him: “Go forth (lekh lekha).” These words allude to that ladder of holiness by which man may attach himself to the Holy One, blessed be He; it is the supreme ladder by which to attain the Holy One, blessed be He. Therefore God said to Abraham: “Go forth (lekh lekha),” because Abraham could not attain this ladder before his arrival in the land of Chanaan.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Zohar, the great book of Jewish mysticism, God’s first word to Abraham, “Lekh lekha” (“Go forth,” literally “go to yourself”), is a call to set out: it is by moving forward that Abraham can climb the ladder that brings him closer to God, and nothing God does is without reason. Today, dare a small departure — a step you keep postponing, a new place, a long-awaited conversation — with trust, like a step on that ladder.
