Lesson 217

As the apple-tree among the trees of the forest, so is my Beloved among the sons of men.

Excerpt

It is written: “As the apple-tree among the trees of the forest, so is my Beloved among the sons of men. I rested under the shadow of Him whom I had ardently desired, and His fruit is sweet to my mouth.” The “apple-tree” designates the Holy One, blessed be He, who is ardently desirable and distinguished by His color from all the other trees, none of which can be compared with Him.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Zohar, which here quotes the Song of Songs, the apple tree that stands out among the trees of the forest is an image of God, “the Holy One, blessed be He”: we love to rest in His shade and to taste the sweetness of His fruit. Today, give yourself a real pause under a tree or near a window, and eat a piece of fruit slowly, savouring this moment of rest.
