When Hallaj had been utterly consumed by the fire kindled for him, a Sufi burning with love of God happened to arrive, staff in hand, and sat upon the heap of ashes into which Hallaj had been reduced. Then he opened his mouth and stirred his flame-like tongue to speak, until the ashes were moved by it. He then said to those present: “Answer me precisely, and tell me where Hallaj is, who said: ‘I am the Truth (God)?’”
All that Thou hast said and all that Thou hast heard, all that Thou hast known and all that Thou hast seen, is not even the beginning of what Thou must know. Annihilate Thyself, since the ruined abode of the world is not Thy place. Thou must seek the trunk of the tree; let it suffice Thee, whether the branches exist or do not exist. The true sun shines forever; regard it neither as an atom nor as a shadow.
