A man’s beloved happened by chance to fall into the water; her lover hastened to plunge in to rescue her. When the two lovers were close to one another, the beloved said to her lover: “O ignorant one! Since I have thrown myself into flowing water, why have you thrown yourself into it too?” “I threw myself into the water,” he replied, “because I recognize no one other than you. It is already long since, truly, I have been you; you are me, and we two are but one. Are you me, or am I you? Is there anything of duality? Either I am you, or you are me, or you are yourself. Since you are me and I am you for ever, our two bodies are but one and the same body: that is all.”
When duality came into being, it found thee in unity. When duality disappeared, it found thee in unity. Lose thyself in unity, and Thou shalt be absorbed therein. To act otherwise is to be separated from it.
