Mantic uttaïr, Allegorical Words

The saint of Turkestan once said of himself: “I love two things, namely, my son and my piebald horse. If I were to receive news of my child’s death, I would give my horse in thanksgiving, because these two things are like two idols to my dear soul.”
Until Thou consumest thyself like the candle, do not boast before the assembly of the sincerity of Thy love. He who prides himself on this sincerity must entirely renounce his worldly interests. The sincere man who eats his bread greedily thereby receives his reward.
