Mantic uttaïr, Praise of Osman

He is the Lord of the Sunna; He is the absolute light; what do I say! Osman, son of Affân, the master of the two lights, is he who was plunged into the ocean of spiritual knowledge; he was the centre of religion. The exaltation attained by the banner of faith, it attained through Osman, the commander of the believers. The religious splendour that shines upon the surface of the two worlds was drawn from the luminous heart of the possessor of the two lights. This second Joseph, according to the Prophet’s word, was a mine, what do I say! an ocean of piety and modesty. He sacrificed himself to serve his kinsman (Muhammad); he staked his life for the fulfilment of the Prophet’s designs. His head was severed while he sat. He clung to nothing save compassion.
It was chiefly in his time that right guidance and honour spread through the world. Through his justice, faith spread, and through his wisdom, the Coran. The Lord of lords said: “The angels in heaven are jealous of Osman.” And the Prophet also said: “God does not reckon with Osman when He discloses His mysteries to him.” How could he not have accepted investiture with the khalifat? since the Prophet clasped his hand as a sign of transmitting His power to him. Each of those present at the installation of the first two Khalfes said: “I would strike my breast if I were absent, as was the possessor of the two lights.”
