Lesson 69

Listening to music is lovers' food, because it recalls to them their primal union with God.

Excerpt

As we are all members of Adam, We have heard these melodies in Paradise; Though earth and water have cast their veil upon us, We retain faint reminiscences of those heavenly songs. But while we are thus shrouded by gross earthly veils, How can the tones of the dancing spheres reach us? Hence it is that listening to music is lovers' food, Because it recalls to them their primal union with God.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Rûmî in the Masnavi, we have all heard heavenly melodies in Paradise, and music awakens that buried memory of our primal union with God. Today, listen to a piece of music that uplifts you, with your eyes closed, doing nothing else, and let it remind you where your heart comes from.
