Sire, I have received so many gifts from thy hand that I could not refuse the bitter fruit thou givest me. If at every moment a treasure comes to me from thy hand, why should I grieve over a single bitterness? Since I am laden with thy blessings, why should one bitterness drive me away from thee?

β¨ To meditate on today
According to Attar, a slave whose king had offered him a bitter fruit ate it with joy, for he had received so many gifts from his hand that a single bitterness could not drive him away; Attar sees in this the image of our gratitude toward God. Today, when something seems bitter to you, recall three gifts you have received from that same life, and welcome this moment without closing yourself off.
