According to Attar, the Persian Sufi poet, the hoopoe, guide of the birds, explains to a bird attached to appearances that love which stops at outward things ends up setting beings against one another, whereas love of the invisible — of God and of the beauty hidden in each person — is pure and brings people together. Today, notice in someone a quality of the heart (kindness, courage, patience) rather than their appearance, and tell them so.
